Upper Peninsula, MI

A walk through a forest is invigorating and healing due to the constant interaction of all sense modalities; Bachelard speaks of 'the polyphony of the senses'. The eye collaborates with the body and the other senses. One's sense of reality is strengthened and articulated by this constant interaction. Architecture is essentially an extension of the nature into the man-made realm, providing the ground for perception and the horizon of experiencing and understanding the world. It is not an isolated and self-sufficient artifact; it directs our attention and existential experience to wider horizons.

I'm often surprised at how architects, both those brilliantly deft at manipulating form and those dismally ungifted with it, equally defend the position that form is the only rightful end of architectural propositions. I'm shocked at how egregiously silly they sound and how unaware they are of it. "The hunters for form" take many guises and cut across all generations.: young narcissists stricken with computer puppy love, who believe in magic (and software faeries too no doubt), and are totally enthralled with  whatever the beloved machine digitally excretes;
